Education Program
at Cold Harbor Road

History of Cold Harbor Road’s Bible School Curriculum
In the fall of 1994, Cold Harbor Road
began the first use of its own curriculum in our Bible classes. The idea of
writing our own curriculum was initially that of Karen Woods Jones. Karen
designed and wrote the lessons which were then proofed and edited by Greg
Elliott.
The curriculum is written
to be studied over a five-year time span. Three years are spent studying the
Old Testament, and two years are spent studying the New Testament. The entire
Bible is studied; nothing is left out. It is studied in both Sunday and
Wednesday Bible classes in most cases. We use our curriculum for ages
two-years-old through adults. If a child begins the curriculum at age two and
remains with us through high school graduation, he/she will study the entire
Bible three times.
The teachers’ guides
present the scripture text, memory verse, outline and facts of the text, ideas
for lesson presentation, and discussion questions. Each teacher adjusts the
lesson age-appropriately for his/her own class and includes whatever handwork
he/she feels will reinforce the lesson text. Handwork is provided by the
teachers; it is not included within the curriculum books. Many coloring pages,
puzzles, and other types of handwork are available through Bible book stores.
The knowledge our students
have gained from this in-depth Bible study is becoming apparent now with those
that began the curriculum early-on and are now reaching high school age. Many
(including their teachers) have commented on how amazing it is that our students
know so much about the Bible. Just as an example, Grayson Matchett, three
years-old, can recite the names of all the books of the Old Testament, and the
first and second grade students can tell you what happened in each chapter of
Acts. Our teams have consistently placed high in annual Bible Bowls.
We might also mention the
high quality and dedication of our teachers. We have quite a few teachers that
have chosen to teach throughout an entire five-year term and some that have
taught even longer. The love and study that our teachers put into the teaching
of their classes is the cornerstone for the development of our children’s Bible
knowledge. “…whosoever shall do and teach [my
commandments], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:19
We welcome requests to share our curriculum from other
congregations and individuals. To date, we have sent it to twenty-one
states and four foreign countries. It is made available on CD.
Email us if you have further questions about
this or would like a copy. It is free to anyone interested, but we do ask,
if possible, to be reimbursed for our costs of supplies, copying, and mailing
which is only $6.00. (We make no profit, and if you can't afford the $6,
we will send it to you anyway. We just want to help you teach the Bible to
your kids!)
We are very pleased with Cold Harbor
Road’s Bible school curriculum. We feel we are truly following God’s command in
Proverbs 6:22 to train our children in the way they should go. We pray that God
will continue to bless our efforts and that the future’s church will be
well-grounded in God’s Holy Word.
